Longitudinal Curriculum
While in Spokane, FMSRTT residents participate in all aspects of the FMS residency program including assignments in the family practice center, conferences and social activities.
Procedural Curriculum -- A particular strength of the FMSRTT is procedural training. All sites emphasize colposcopy, LEEP, endometrial, breast, and skin biopsy, stress testing, EGD, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, flexible rhinolaryngoscopy, casting/splinting, soft tissue repair, circumcision, vasectomy, cesarean sections, and OB ultrasonography.
Conferences -- There are weekly conferences at each RTT site conducted by RTT faculty, residents and visiting University of Washington and Family Medicine Spokane faculty. In addition, each RTT resident attends Teaching Days conducted in Spokane. Weekly Focused Teaching is teleconferenced from Family Medicine Spokane to Colville.
Call -- Night call in the RTT is completed from home and averages every fourth day throughout the year. Call responsibilities vary with the service on which the resident is assigned.
Moonlighting -- Opportunities exist in the RTT with the approval of the Program Director
Resident Faculty Retreats -- Held once a year in an informal setting away from the RTT site, these events provide time for in-depth discussions of major interests/issues with the intent of increasing knowledge and problem-solving. Additionally this scheduled time provides a setting for casual interaction between residents and faculty.
BLS and ACLS -- These courses are required of all incoming residents during orientation in Spokane. Recertification is required prior to the R3 year.
ATLS, ALSO and PALS -- These courses are provided during the R1, R2 or R3 year.
Neonatal Resuscitation -- Provided by FMS and FMSRTT residents and faculty to keep all residents current.
Resident Evaluations - Residents are evaluated in writing by attendings after each rotation. These evaluations, along with those from nursing and office staff are reviewed and discussed between the resident and their assigned faculty advisor. This provides the resident an opportunity to review educational issues and set goals appropriately. At this time the resident can also discuss personal issues and goals.
